Chapter Fourteen

WHILE BENNETT KEPT PACE WITH the rusty car, Addie sent a text letting Aunt Kate know they’d gotten sidetracked. Addie kept the message vague, knowing her aunt would worry if she knew Bennett was tailing the suspicious pair.

They followed the rusty car to a coffee shop called A Brewed Awakening on the northeast side of town.

“Hey, isn’t that Darlene?” Addie pointed at a woman getting out of a compact hybrid.

As they passed, Addie noticed a rental car brand on the license plate frame.

“They must be meeting her,” Bennett said.

“You should see if you can listen to their conversation. All three of them would recognize me.”

As much as she wanted to know what Ralph’s fiancée and friends had to say to each other, Addie didn’t want to draw their attention.

“I’ll see what I can do.”

He shut off the engine, got out, and went into the coffee shop.

The Jeep was parked in a spot that allowed Addie to see into A Brewed Awakening. It was late afternoon, and the place wasn’t busy.

Darlene and the two others got in line for coffee with Bennett right behind them.

Addie grumbled under her breath, sure she was missing something interesting. It wouldn’t be as good to hear it secondhand from Bennett.

Gloria, Lawrence, and Darlene went to a table by the window. Bennett took his drink to the table right next to them, also with a window view. He glanced out at her and then down at his phone.

Addie’s phone buzzed with a text from him: Put me on mute.

Then the phone rang with his number on the screen. She answered and muted it. Looking up, she grinned at him. He was letting her listen in.

Bennett nudged his phone across the table to better pick up the conversation.

“ . . . don’t understand why you won’t tell me what you were doing here,” a woman’s voice said through the phone. A glance through the window told Addie it was Darlene speaking. “You must know why Ralph was here, too. It had something to do with Wanda, I know that for sure.”

“He’d mentioned the Apple Festival, so we thought we’d check it out,” said a man’s voice—Lawrence’s.

“Then why did he lie to me about where he was?” Darlene asked. “He never said a word about any Apple Festival.”

“No idea, honey,” said a different female voice, this one rough as if the speaker was a lifelong smoker. Addie recognized Gloria’s voice.

“Don’t lie to me, Gloria,” Darlene said, her hurt clear. “I thought the two of you were my friends. Were you only Ralph’s friends? Is that it?”

“Of course not,” Lawrence said. “You know we’re here for you. We stayed in town to be here for you in your time of need.”

“If you were here for me, you’d stop lying!” Darlene’s voice rose in volume and pitch. “My fiancé is dead! How can you sit there and say you want to help me when you won’t tell me what any of you were doing here in the first place?”

“You seem to think he was here because of that lady.
